The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Volume...

The present volume, set in the turbulent post-World War I period, finds Einstein awaiting news of the 1919 British eclipse expedition to test the general relativistic prediction of the deflection of starlight by the sun. With the expedition's success, he becomes the first science celebrity of our age. Deeply interested in the other, stellar redshift test of his theory, Einstein supports astronomers engaged in experimental work on the issue. Piqued by early suggestions of a unified field theory, he ponders how to unify gravitation and electromagnetic field theory and also works to resolve contradictions between the new quantum physics and relativity. His open-minded exchanges with colleagues may challenge his later image as the stubborn critic of quantum mechanics. We see Einstein deeply engaged in discussing social and political issues, participating in humanitarian efforts, and intervening on behalf of intellectuals condemned to death after the fall of the Bavarian Soviet republic. He faced anti-Semitic outbursts, reflected increasingly on his own identity as a Jew and assisted in efforts toward the establishment of the Hebrew University. As an internationalist opponent of war, and a German-speaking Swiss citizen whose renown was sealed by the Englishman Eddington's confirmation of relativity, Einstein mitigated postwar hostility toward German scholars. Correspondence with family and friends documents his divorce, remarriage to his cousin, and his closeness to his two sons. Notwithstanding evidence in newly uncovered material concerning efforts to lure Einstein back to Switzerland, and also to the Netherlands, Einstein, entertaining high hopes for the young Weimar Republic, remained in Berlin. This volume reveals new facets of Einstein as he constructively participated in German and European scientific, academic, and cultural life. Since this translation includes only select portions of Volume 9, it is not recommended for purchase without the main volume.

The Political Theory of Neoliberalism: Currenci...

Neoliberalism has become a dirty word. In political discourse, it stigmatizes a political opponent as a market fundamentalist; in academia, the concept is also mainly wielded by its critics, while those who might be seen as actual neoliberals deny its very existence. Yet, the term remains necessary for understanding the varieties of capitalism across space and time. Arguing that neoliberalism is widely misunderstood when reduced to a doctrine of markets and economics alone, this book shows that it has a political dimension that we can reconstruct and critique.By examining the views of state, democracy, science, and politics in the work of six major figures - Eucken, Röpke, Rüstow, Hayek, Friedman, and Buchanan - it offers the first comprehensive account of the varieties of neoliberal political thought.Ordoliberal perspectives, in particular, emerge in a new light. Turning from abstract to concrete, the book also interprets recent neoliberal reforms of the European Union to offer a diagnosis of contemporary capitalism more generally. The latest economic crises hardly brought the neoliberal era to an end. Instead, as Thomas Biebricher shows, we are witnessing an authoritarian liberalism, whose reign has only just begun. The book is published by Stanford University Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks.Praise for the book:"This is a brilliant book - one of the most illuminating I have read in a long time...at once deeply scholarly and profoundly relevant, it is a model of what political theory should be." (Margaret Kohn, professor at University of Toronto)"A timely and formidable intervention in current political theory..." (Yves Winter, associate professor at McGill University)"A powerful corrective to the existing scholarship." (Andrew Dilts, professor at Loyola Marymount University) 1. Language: English. Spend more study time on what's really decisive in your games! The average chess player spends too much time on studying opening theory. In his day, World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker argued that improving amateurs should spend about 5% of their study time on openings. These days club players are probably closer to 80%, often focusing on opening lines that are popular among grandmasters. Club players shouldn't slavishly copy the choices of grandmasters. GMs need to squeeze every drop of advantage from the opening and therefore play highly complex lines that require large amounts of memorization. The main objective for club players should be to emerge from the opening with a reasonable position, from which you can simply play chess and pit your own tactical and positional understanding against that of your opponent. Gerard Welling and Steve Giddins recommend the Old Indian-Hanham Philidor set-up as a basis for both Black and White. They provide ideas and strategies that can be learned in the shortest possible time, require the bare minimum of maintenance and updating, and lead to rock-solid positions that you will know how to handle. By adopting a similar set-up for both colours, with similar plans and techniques, you will further reduce study time.

The Science of Sleep , Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 49min

The Science of Sleep, by developmental molecular biologist Dr. John Medina, gives you the facts - and the prescription to sleep well - in his signature engaging style. Adapted from Medina's Brain Rules for Aging Well: 10 Principles for Staying Vital, Happy, and Sharp, in this chapter, you'll learn how the sleep cycle is born of a constant tension between hormones and brain regions vying to keep you awake and hormones and brain regions trying to make you go to sleep. This is called opponent-process theory. Sleep, scientists are finding, doesn't have as much to do with energy restoration as it does with processing memories and flushing out toxins in the brain. As you grow older, your sleep cycle becomes more fragmented, particularly the part of the cycle during which toxins are flushed out of the brain. Accruing good sleep habits by middle age (a stable sleep routine; no caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine six hours prior to going to sleep) is the best way to avoid sleep-related cognitive decline in old age. You may already be experiencing the sometimes unpleasant effects of the aging process. Or you may be deeply concerned about your loved ones who are. Either way, The Science of Sleep is for you. 1. 50 Reasons to Vote for Hillary Clinton , Hörbuc...

Everything you need to know when deciding who you want to be the next President of the United States. This piece endeavors to highlight Hillary Rodham-Clinton accomplishments and qualifications to be President of the United States. While her criticisms and scandals are not avoided, they are also not rehashed ad-nauseum. Furthermore, we explore her political philosophy which is rooted in the Machiavellian "realpolitik" school of politics. Whether one loves, loathes, or is indifferent about America's female political powerhouse, it cannot be denied that her list of qualifications and accomplishments to serve as the most powerful person on earth is an impressive one. Moreover, there are two brief lessons on the nature of Machiavellian political theory and the nature of fascism, the latter being a political platform not so subtly espoused by her opponent Donald Trump. Questions about her political morality are raised where appropriate; however, in turn, the Republican and media witch hunts against her and Bill Clinton are addressed as well. It is a clear, factual, and concise effort to push the undecided voter into Hillary's camp, as we also illustrate the danger presented by Trump's brand of neo-fascist con-artist politics. In the end, November is just around the corner and the fate of America and the planet for the next four years rides on who is sworn into the presidency in January 2017. 1. Language: English. No Limits Hold Em: Learn Game Theory Optimal! A...

As a game, Texas Hold'em has been around for over 100 years and its popularity is still growing every day. Along with that growth comes new theories and practices that the earliest players, even those who competed at a professional level, could never have envisioned. The most important of these is the concept of Game Theory Optimal (GTO) and if you are interested in all its ins and outs then this is the book you have been waiting for. In poker, the term Game Theory Optimal (GTO) gets thrown around a good deal these days, often in regard to a variety of different concepts. It can be used in reference to opponent modeling as well as thinking about poker situations in terms of probabilities, ranges, and results. A GTO solution to a specific game has precise mathematical definitions which explains why it has become somewhat of the dominant framework when it comes to finding an ideal poker strategy. This book covers the ins and outs of doing so through GTO directly as well as with the help of ancillary concepts like optimal ranges and minimum defense frequencies. Many newer Hold'em players think that the pros are simply luckier than they are when it comes to drawing hands that are the nuts and making the right bets or folds at the critical moment. This is a fallacy, however, and one that this book seeks to rectify. Anyone can learn to make the right plays at the right time as long as they understand the reasons that make certain actions more profitable in given situations than others. This book lays the math behind these moves bare so that instead of relying on luck or intuition every player can move forward confident that their plays are as solid as those of the pros, even if their skills aren't yet quite on the same level. The sheer number of games of Texas Hold'em being played online and in person around the world means that someone is always on the verge of a major payday. Why can't it be you? Do yourself a favor and take control of your financial 1. Language: English. Narrator: Keith McCarthy. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/097694/bk_acx0_097694_sample.mp3. Tocqueville: A Very Short Introduction  , Hörbu...

No one has ever described American democracy with more accurate insight or more profoundly than Alexis de Tocqueville. After meeting with Americans on extensive travels in the United States, and intense study of documents and authorities, he authored the landmark Democracy in America, publishing its two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Ever since, this book has been the best source for every serious attempt to understand America and democracy itself. Yet Tocqueville himself remains a mystery behind the elegance of his style. Now one of our leading authorities on Tocqueville explains him in this splendid new entry in Oxford's acclaimed Very Short Introduction series. Harvey Mansfield addresses his subject as a thinker, clearly and incisively exploring Tocqueville's writings--not only his masterpiece, but also his secret Recollections, intended for posterity alone, and his unfinished work on his native France, The Old Regime and the Revolution. Tocqueville was a liberal, Mansfield believes, but not of the usual sort. The many elements of his life found expression in his thought: his aristocratic ancestry, his ventures in politics, his voyages abroad, his hopes and fears for America, and his disappointment with France. All his writings show a passion for political liberty and insistence on human greatness. Perhaps most important, he saw liberty not in theories, but in the practice of self-government in America. Ever an opponent of abstraction, he offered an analysis that forces us to consider what we actually do in our politics--suggesting that theory itself may be an enemy of freedom. And that, Mansfield states, makes him a vitally important thinker for today. Translator of an authoritative edition of Democracy in America, Harvey Mansfield here offers the fruit of decades of research and reflection in a clear, insightful, and marvelously compact introduction. 1.
