That's Why I'm Here: The Chris and Stefanie Spi...

Chris Spielman was a high school and Ohio State football legend and a four-time Pro Bowl linebacker, but he didn't tackle his toughest opponent until his playing career was almost over. In 1998, his wife, Stefanie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. So began an 11-year journey that brought joy and suffering to the Spielmans, as well as hope and inspiration to thousands of others. In That's Why I'm Here, Spielman traces his storied career, recalls his courtship of Stefanie Belcher, cherishes the growth of their four children, and invokes the deep spiritual faith that gave their family wisdom and comfort in times of struggle. Though there are plenty of on-the-field tales in the book, it's not just for football fans. It's for people whose lives have been touched by cancer, for people whose own faith has wavered, and for people who want to meet a woman of tremendous beauty, grace and strength. Though Stefanie passed away on November 19, 2009, her memory and inspiration live on. With laughter and tears, joy and heartbreak, this book reminds us that her spirit is still here. 1. Iordan Chimet (November 18, 1924 May 23, 2006) was a Romanian poet, children's writer and essayist, whose work was inspired by Surrealism and Onirism. He is also known as a memoirist, theater, art and film critic, book publisher and translator. Chimet, who was an opponent of totalitarianism in general and of the Communist regime in particular, was persecuted by the latter as a dissident, and lived much of his life in obscurity. His experience as an employee of the cooperative society Centrocoop also made him one of the first professional copywriters in his country. The poems, fantasy works and fairy tales he authored, although largely ignored locally upon being published, have since drawn acclaim for their accomplished style, and are considered by many unique in Romanian literature. They explored the themes of innocence and melancholy, and have themselves been seen as a venue for a discreet advocacy of disobedience. Chimet was also the author of critical essays on Latin American studies and Western or popular culture, and a publisher of anthologies on some of the major themes in Romanian society.

Georgian Myths and Folktales
22,80 € *

This publication intends to show the distinct character of Georgian folk narratives that are as diverse as the country’s geography itself. It offers the translation of the selected myths and folktales, many of which represent the Georgian regional dialect versions and linguistically complicated texts, some of which quite differ from the present-day standard Georgian. Every attempt has been made to preserve the original essence of the texts and the cultural context. The publication includes original translations of forty Georgian folk tales and fifteen myths. The latter are stories representing mythologized chronicles of “holy wars” of old times, once carried out on the border of Europe and Asia by the ancestors of the Georgian highlanders. These mythological narratives may be considered as unparalleled examples of mythologizing real events that have taken place in the past, as well as incomparable representations of demonizing the opponent image. The introduction, notes and glossary of the publication help the reader to better understand the cultural and historical contexts of the traditional Georgian folk narratives.

Tales from the Indiana High School Basketball L...

It’s often said that while Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in Massachusetts, the sport was raised and ultimately came of age in the high schools of Indiana, the state where politics, religion, and sweet corn fall in line behind the game played with the round orange ball. Tales from the Indiana High School Basketball Locker Room, now newly revised, centers on those special people who have played the game—their stories, their passion, their drive for excellence, their laughs, and their tears. This is a book about Lebanon schoolboy hero Rick Mount, the first prep basketball player ever featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated; it’s about Gene Cato, the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s former commissioner whose father—his high school coach—would not put the young scoring phenomenon into a game until his team’s fans demanded it; it’s also about Marion’s “Purple Reign”—consecutive state championships in 1985, 1986, and 1987 when the Giants were the most important game on every opponent’s schedule. John Wooden, Bobby Plump, Steve Alford, Damon Bailey, Gary Harris, Caleb Swanigan, Yogi Ferrell—it’s as easy for an Indiana high school basketball fan to roll the names off the tongue as it is to find the broadcast of a high school game on AM radio on any Friday night during an Indiana winter. Tales from the Indiana High School Basketball Locker Room is not so much about statistics and winning streaks as it is about the personalities and emotions of those who created a phenomenon that became a way of life in the Hoosier State.
