In certain contact sports such as rugby and Professional wrestling , when a player feels an opposing players actions will lead to him or herself being seriously injured, he may utter a safeword which tells the opponent to stop the actions. Professional Rugby union footballers recognize the safeword "Neck". This is said, during a scrum, when a player fears his neck risks being broken. Players on both teams will recognize this and immediately release any downward pressure.

Rugby union has been played in Uganda since colonial times when it was introduced by the British. A notable fan of all Ugandan sports, the dictator Idi Amin had been very athletic in his time in the army. At 193 cm (6 ft 4 in) tall, he was the Ugandan light heavyweight boxing champion from 1951 to 1960, and also a swimmer and rugby player. He played rugby initially with the Nile R.F.C. and later for the Kobs R.F.C. in Kampala. Amin also said in one of his speeches, "As you know I am a rugby player. I am second row, so I know how to push. I am very big. You don''t want to push against me. And I also play wing three-quarter and I am very fast. I can run one hundred meters in nine point five seconds (applause). If you tackle me, you will try, and you will hurt only yourself. So to everyone who is a boxer, I say this, do what you have to do to knock out your opponent."

The specifics of the rule differ between the two major codes. Offside rules in rugby union are particularly complex to the casual observer. Often the only indication that they have been infringed occurs when the referee blows the whistle. This, therefore, is only a basic attempt to explain offside in the context of rugby union. While in play, when a side is in possession, players are offside if they are in front of the ball carrier. This means that they cannot receive any passes (in which case a forward pass would have occurred) or kicks from the ball carrier. If offside players do participate in the game, for example by playing the ball or obstructing an opponent (by loitering), then their team will be penalised - in the case of a forward pass, with a scrum, in the case of a kick received offside, a scrum if accidental or a penalty otherwise.
