The study of budo, or the Japanese martial arts for self-cultivation, is a lifelong path toward perfection of character. Here, Dave Lowry, a sword master who has practiced and taught budo for over 40 years, addresses the myriad issues, vagaries, and inconsistencies that arise for students of karate-do, judo, kendo, kenjutsu, aikido, and iaido as their training develops. He examines such questions as: What is the relationship between the student and teacher, and what should one expect from the other? What does rank really mean? How do you correctly and sensitively practice with someone less experienced than you? What does practice look like as one ages? Why do budo arts put such an emphasis on etiquette? And many others Lowry also gives practical advice for beginning and advanced students on improving structural integrity in posture and movement, focusing under stress, stances and preparatory actions before engaging with an opponent, and recognizing a good teacher from a bad one. 1. Cliff St. James returns to a Post-Katrina New Orleans to take on another case in Ed Kovac´s Good Junk, this wonderful action-packed follow-up to Storm Damage. While wrestling with guilt over having accidentally killed a mixed martial arts opponent in a sparring session, private detective Cliff St. James returns to New Orleans and finds himself assisting the police in an investigation of the murder of a U.S. government ´´black projects” engineer. St. James quickly uncovers ´´The Buyers Club´´, a murky network of seedy arms dealers and foreign intelligence agents purchasing state-of-the-art weaponry and high technology, perhaps abetted by elements of the U.S. government. As members of the Buyers Club start turning up dead, St. James fights for his life and sanity as he struggles to solve the murders and undermine a treacherous espionage conspiracy. 1. Winston Churchill receives startling news from a German aristocrat in early 1933 after Adolf Hitler is appointed Chancellor of Germany. The aristocrat has learned of a plot to stage a fake assassination attempt on the new German leader that the Nazis will use as a pretext to declare martial law and liquidate their political opponents. Unknown to Hitler, however, his enemies within the Nazi party - the Black Front - are conspiring with renegade elements of his own SS to turn the fake assassination attempt into a real one. Churchill tells the American newspaper titan, William Randolph Hearst, of the fake plot, and together, they persuade Mattie McGary, Hearst´s top photojournalist and Churchill´s adventure-seeking Scottish goddaughter, to investigate. Mattie readily agrees, in large part because exposing the fake plot may help her finally shed the unfortunate reputation she has in Germany as ´´Hitler´s favorite foreign journalist´´. Soon after she leaves for Germany, Mattie´s fiancé, the American lawyer and former MID agent, Bourke Cockran, Jr., also travels to Germany to help his publisher client, Freedom House, acquire the rights to Rear Area Pig, an expose of Hitler´s less-than-heroic wartime service. Once in Germany, both Mattie and Cockran find themselves in peril at the hands of the SS loyal to Hitler who will stop at nothing to keep Cockran from acquiring the book and Mattie from learning the truth about the fake plot. Threats to Mattie multiply when SS agents working for the Black Front attempt to coerce her into joining the real plot to kill Hitler. When Cockran learns the Black Front intends to kill Mattie along with Hitler at his alpine retreat, the Berghof, he reluctantly seeks the help of Reichspresident Herman Göring and Kurt von Sturm, a top Göring aide who is also one of Mattie´s former lovers. The one-time rivals for Mattie´s affection quickly conclude that there is only one way to protect Mattie. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mr. Robert Lindsell. THE CHINESE ´´LORD OF THE RINGS´´ - NOW IN ENGLISH FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE SERIES EVERY CHINESE READER HAS BEEN ENJOYING FOR DECADES - 300 MILLION COPIES SOLD. China: 1200 A.D. The Song Empire has been invaded by its warlike Jurchen neighbours from the north. Half its territory and its historic capital lie in enemy hands; the peasants toil under the burden of the annual tribute demanded by the victors. Meanwhile, on the Mongolian steppe, a disparate nation of great warriors is about to be united by a warlord whose name will endure for eternity: Genghis Khan. Guo Jing, son of a murdered Song patriot, grew up with Genghis Khan´s army. He is humble, loyal, perhaps not altogether wise, and is fated from birth to one day confront an opponent who is the opposite of him in every way: privileged, cunning and flawlessly trained in the martial arts. Guided by his faithful shifus, The Seven Heroes of the South, Guo Jing must return to China - to the Garden of the Drunken Immortals in Jiaxing - to fulfil his destiny. But in a divided land riven by war and betrayal, his courage and his loyalties will be tested at every turn. Translated from the Chinese by Anna Holmwood
Taiji (pronounced Tie-jee) is an excellent system of exercise characterized by spiraling, supple, lithe movements, but it is much more than just a mild exercise. Taiji can also be used as an effective martial art, moving meditation, a way by which blood, nerve, and lymph blockages can be reduced, as well as reducing needless tensions, thus improving health; a way to develop good balance and power, clearer thinking, smooth and more effective actions, and is even able to make one better looking. These are some of the benefits of practicing taiji, but they do not tell us what the essence of taiji is. Taiji, in the most succinct terms, is a way of holistically and optimally interacting with every aspect of life. In the martial art context, taiji is simply a matter of continuously and efficiently propagating and delivering energy and force to an opponent while simultaneously gathering intelligence regarding his every move, using his force and energy against him. 1.
