Let us endeavor to see things as they are, and then enquire whether we ought to complain. Whether to see life as it is, will give us much consolation, I know not, but the consolation which is drawn from truth if any there be, is solid and durable: that which may be derived from errour, must be, like its original, fallacious and fugitive. Samuel Johnson, Letter to Bennet Langton (1758) Attorneys and clients make hundreds of decisions in every litigation case. From initially deciding which attorney to retain to deciding which witnesses to call at trial, from deciding whether to ?le a complaint to deciding whether to appeal a verdict, attorneys and clients make multiple, critical decisions about strategies, costs, arguments, valuations, evidence and negotiations. Once made, these de- sions are scrutinized by an opponent intent on exploiting the consequences of any mistake. In this intense and adversarial arena, decision-making errors often are transparent, irreversible and dispositive, wielding the power to bankrupt clients and dissolve law ?rms. Although attorneys and clients may regard sound decision making as incidental to effective lawyering, sound decision making actually is the essence of effective lawyering. An attorney s knowledge, intelligence and experience are inert re- urces until the attorney decides how to deploy those skills to serve the client s interests. Those decisions, in turn, largely determine a case s course and outcome.

This book presents a detailed discussion of Clausewitz's principal lines of thought and methods of implementation. It elaborates on his main objective of laying a foundation for the education of up-and-coming creative, knowledgeable and experienced future leaders. The book encourages reflection and study in strategic thinking in order to transform knowledge into genuine capability. The book explores the question of what a twenty-first-century decision-maker can learn from these strategic lines of thought. It bridges the gap between philosophical theory and strategic interaction in conflicts with an equal opponent. Readers learn to understand and employ the clash of wills, attack and defence, and friction, and in essence the necessary virtues of a strategic commander. The findings presented help to identify the essential features in complex decision-making situations and developing possible courses of strategic action from a holistic standpoint. As such, the book is a must read for strategists, business practitioners, and scholars of political leadership and management interested in a better understanding of strategy and decision-making.

OODA Loop

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The OODA loop (for observe, orient, decide, and act) is a concept originally applied to the combat operations process, often at the strategic level in both the military operations. It is now also often applied to understand commercial operations and learning processes. The concept was developed by military strategist and USAF Colonel John Boyd. It has become an important concept in both business and military strategy. According to Boyd, decision-making occurs in a recurring cycle of observe-orient-decide-act. An entity (whether an individual or an organization) that can process this cycle quickly, observing and reacting to unfolding events more rapidly than an opponent, can thereby "get inside" the opponent''s decision cycle and gain the advantage.

Crisis Decision Making

Crisis is a volatile situation replete with multiple threats. Still every crisis varies from the other. The decision-making procedure may also be different to deal with the crisis according to its requirement. Pakistan, like other states has faced several such crises. Interestingly, most of the said situations were with India. This book envisages a study of four crises, between Pakistan and India. These include the crisis evolving out of the minority issue of 1950, the Brasstacks crisis of 1986- 87, the crisis due to the nuclear tests in 1998, and the Kargil crisis of 1999. Out of these, one (1950) was in consequence of British policy, two (1986-87 and 1998) precipitated as a result of Indian actions, and one (1999) was an outcome of Pakistani actions. This study has vital importance to assess and analyze these crises situations. The detailed study in the theoretical frame work of crisis'' and crisis decision making'', has established the fact that it is essential for a nuclear power, when pitched against an opponent, to behave in such a compact way that lacks no theoretical, rational, and favorable aspect of any issue, while making a decision.

Understanding decision-making in basketball

We investigated decision-making and interpersonal coordination under constraints, such as posture of the opponent and angular relations of the performers to the scoring target, in basketball. Affordance-based decisions of the attacker, of which side to drive to the basket, depended on feet positioning of the defender, at small interpersonal distances scaled for each dyad. The alignment between the attacker and defender to the basket constrained the decision of the attacker of which side to move past the defender. To succeed, attackers moved quickly in order to increase their relative angle with the defender and basket, while enclosing the interpersonal distance. Dyadic coordination tendencies, expressed by longitudinal and lateral displacements, were also constrained by the relative angle of performers to the basket. Our experimental findings suggested that a continuum of informational constraints, related with the posture of the opponent and angular relations between performers and basket, might have shaped the exploration of emerging possibilities for action at different spatial and temporal scales.
