The author's thesis statement was, "Modelling the strength of relationships between agents and predicting the behaviour of trading partner agents in a multi agent argumentation system enables agents to build trusted trading partnerships". To develop a relationship aware argumentation system, the following research questions are addressed. How does an agent specify needs and which enactments (i.e., products and services) satisfy the specified needs?, Which opponent agent does an agent select to interact with in an attempt to satisfy a given need?, How does an agent interact (i.e., negotiate) with an opponent agent hopefully to reach an agreement?, How does an agent perform the enactment of a signed commitment, and how does an agent evaluate the enactment that satisfies its needs?, How and when does an agent analyze interaction history, exchanged information and any promises made to predict its opponent agent's behaviour?, How does one integrate the answers to the above five research questions into a complete system? Addressing the above questions, the author presented an argumentation system that enables trading agents to build trusted trading partnerships through argumentation.

Sibling Constellations in 'White Teeth' (2000) ...

Intermediate Examination Paper from the year 2011 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Tubingen, course: Literature PS II - Extremism in Recent British Fiction and Film, language: English, abstract: In the end of White Teeth and Britz, the respective sibling pairs are at the same time at the same place, each opponent fighting for his or her conviction and against the sibling. But the fact that in the end they are together in the same situation doing the same, reveals that siblings are connected to each other, no matter what conflict they are fighting out. The novel White Teeth by Zadie Smith from 2000 and the movie Britz by Peter Kosminsky from 2007 are both dealing with the motif of opponent siblings and their conflicts. Although this constellation is used as a starting point in both works, the realization and development of the stories is interpreted differently. This paper shall show the parallels and differences of the two sibling pairs amongst each other and their conflicts, and be compared to the tradition of the motif of sibling constellations in literary history, to show the development of facets of this motif. It is accepted to be a fact that both sibling pairs are geared to the literary motif of rivalling siblings, but in White Teeth, the more traditional form of two brothers, in this special case actually twins, is discussed and enhanced, whereas Britz seizes a brother-sister-constellation, which traditionally can be seen as harmony endowing and less rivalling. To get a basis for analysing and comparing the special cases in the chosen works, the motif history and its development will be revised with some examples, which is followed by the argumentation part. 2. Analysis of Sibling Constellations

In late July 1263 a public disputation was convened by King James I of Aragon, pitting Friar Paul Christian against the distinguished rabbi of Gerona, Moses ben Nahman. Organized by leading figures in the Dominican Order to give Friar Paul an opportunity to test his innovative missionizing argumentation against a worthy opponent, the spectacle in Barcelona was colorful, impressive, surely somewhat frightening to the Jews, and ultimately indecisive. Both sides claimed victory, and their documented claims have given rise to substantial disagreement among historians over the tone and outcome of this important event. Robert Chazan's masterly analysis reconstructs the Barcelona disputation from the conflicting Christian and Jewish sources and sets it in its broad historical context, with particular attention to the post-disputation maneuvers on both sides. His richly detailed account focuses on Rabbi ben Nahman's eloquent efforts to reassure his fellow Jews in the face of new missionizing pressures.

Arguing on the Toulmin Model

Toulmin's model has been appropriated, adapted and extended by researchers in the fields of speech communications, philosophy and artificial intelligence. This volume brings together the best contemporary reflection in these fields on the Toulmin model and its current appropriation. The book includes 24 articles by 27 scholars from 10 countries. All the essays are newly written, have been selected from among those received in response to a call for papers, and have been revised extensively in response to referees' comments. They are not exegetical but substantive, extending or challenging Toulmin's ideas in ways that make fresh contributions to the theory of analysing and evaluating arguments. Collectively, they represent the only comprehensive book-length study of the Toulmin model. They point the way to new developments in the theory of argument, including a typology of warrants, a comprehensive theory of defeaters, a rapprochement with formal logic, and a turn from propositions to speech acts as the constituents of argument. TOC:1. Introduction. 2. Reasoning in Theory and Practice. 3. A Citation-Based Reflection on Toulmin and Argument. 4. Complex Cases and Legitimation Inferences: Extending the Toulmin Model to Deliberative Argument in Controversy. 5. A Metamathematical Extension of the Toulmin Agenda. 6. Toulmin's Model of Argument and the Question of Relativism. 7. Systematizing Toulmin's Warrants: An Epistemic Approach. 8. Warranting Arguments, the Virtue of Verb. 9. Evaluating Inferences: The Nature and Role of Warrants. 10. 'Probably'. 11. The Voice of the Other: A Dialogico-Rhetorical Understanding of Opponent and Toulmin's Rebuttal. 12. Evaluating Arguments Based on Toulmin Scheme. 13. Good Reasoning on the Toulmin Model. 14. The Fluidity of Warrants: Using the Toulmin Model to Analyse Practical Discourse. 15. Artificial Intelligence and Law, Logic and Argument Schemes. 16. Multiple Warrants in Practical Reasoning. 17. The Quest for Rationalism without Dogmas in Leibniz and Toulmin. 18. From Arguments to Decisions: Extending the Toulmin View. 19. Using Toulmin Argumentation to Support Dispute Settlement in Discretionary Domains. 20. Toulmin's Model and The Solving of Ill-Structured Problems. 21. Arguing by Question: A Toulminian Reading of Cicero's Account of the Enthymeme. 22. The Uses of Argument in Mathematics. 23. Ecstatic prophecy is characteristic of the prophetic movement (Montanism) that emerged in Christian circles in the second half of the second century. The so called Montanists spread and diversified quickly within the congregations of the Roman Empire and provoked immediate opposition. One such early opponent of Montanism can be reconstructed from the 48th chapter of Epiphanius' Panarion. This opponent polemicises against the Montanist charismatic demands. The Montanist own arguments can also be inferred from the opponent's argumentation, as well as seven oracles spoken by Maximilla and Montanus. This study identifies Epiphanius' source as the earliest reconstructed source on Montanism. It is argued that the author of this source is the apologist Miltiades. In addition, Montanus' and Maximilla's oracles are made the subject of a detailed interpretation, and their biblical background is highlighted.
